Chrome Dev Crash Loop

If you use   Developer (11.0.686.1) you will be used to some odd crashes and problems with Flash videos. This version however has caused considerable problems in both 7 and XP.

I initially thought that the problem might have been due to the new graphics acceleration that has caused others some issues. However disabling this new features from the command line did not help.

The solution was not easy to find and that’s why I’m sharing it here. I found it in the comments on the official Chrome release blog.

  1. Locate Chrome’s profile folder. Mine was in:
    • XP – C:\Documents and Settings\[user name]\Local Settings\Application Data\Chromium\User Data\Default
    • Vista/Windows 7  C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Local\\Chrome\User Data\Default
  2. In your profile folder, backup the files:
    • web data
    • web data-journal
  3. Start Chrome
Note: “web data” contains all you custom search engines and other settings.

This issue seems to have now been resolved.
