Read this before signing-up for Google Apps

It seems that not everyone is so keen on Apps. In his two-star detailed review Simon Jones looks at some of Apps Premier Edition (GAPE) limitations such as:

  • It’s misleading “99.9%” Service Level Agreement (SLA) which excludes outages of less than 10 minutes and scheduled downtime
  • Privacy concerns and possible data protection implications depending on what type of data you store on Google’s servers.

The review doesn’t go in to data migration – an area in which I have a lot of experience. Many people have found the tools offered flaky with the most reliable being only available in Premier Edition not Standard Edition (free).

Personally I still think Google’s suite is great value but there’s no doubt that the killer applications are Gmail and Google Calendar. Google Docs and Google Sites are improving all the time but are not slick enough for more than the simplest tasks – which is often what most people need.
