Passwords: Where and How to Store Them

  1. If you let you web browser save your then make sure you have a good master password
  2. Make sure you setup a BIOS password on your laptop (or desktop computer). You should also have a good Windows/Linux/Mac password.
  3. Make sure you have a copy of your passwords in an encrypted file e.g. Word, Zip or Rar. Email a copy of the file to yourself on a monthly basis. if you have web-based email then you’ll have a copy available even when you’re on holiday and need to check your bank balance online.
  4. See Passwords: 10 Golden Rules article on choosing a good password.
  5. Use a password manager like the free KeePass. It stores passwords (and any other sensitive information) in a highly secure file which itself is protected by a password. Don’t loose the master password as without it you’ll never open the file again!
  6. Don’t forget to email yourself a copy of the file on a regular basis! Versions are available for PC/Linux/MacOS/PocketPC/Symbian (e.g. some Nokia phones)
