Recovering Space on Gmail

(or Google Mail in the UK) has always been generous with the amount of free it offers, currently 7444MB. However there comes a time when you have to start thinking about deleting some of those larger emails. Strangely Google doesn’t make this as easy as it could. The two tutorials below both use similar methods to identify and backup emails with large attachments.

Running out of space on Gmail? Get It Back in 5 minutes.

Find Emails with Large Attachments in your Gmail Mailbox

Lifehacker has some useful tips too such as searching for typical large files with searches like:

  • filename:wmv
  • filename:mov
  • filename:mp3
  • filename:mp4
  • filename:avi
  • filename:doc
  • filename:pdf
  • filename:tif

Of course you can always buy some more space from Google – its very reasonable starting at only $5/year for 20GB.
