From Google Docs to WordPress

Do you use ? If so did you know that you can publish documents from it directly to your ? Here’s how to publish to a site but it also works with other blogs. To set-up:

  • Click the Share button on the right > Publish as a web page > “change your blog site settings” and fill in the details.
  • For WordPress select “My own server/custom”
  • In API select MetaWeblog API for WordPress (although any of the three options should work)
  • The URL should be similar to:
    http://YOURSITE/wordpress/xmlrpc.php for WordPress
  • Add the username and password and optioanly the blog’s name
  • Tick “Include the document title when posting (if supported)”
  • Click the Test button

Click the Share button on the right > Publish as a web page > to blog.

You can have a single blog setup to publish to.

Categorising Your Posts

“To automatically categorise your blog posts, just tag your documents with a category name that you already use on your blog site.” I understand this to mean that if the Google Docs  folder name matches an existing blog category then it will be categorised with it. After a number of tests I have to say this just doesn’t work.

Images

If your Google Doc contains images then they will not be imported but linked to Google Docs instead.

Is it worth it?

I don’t think anyone is going to use Google Docs as a way to post to their blog on a regular basis however its a quick way to copy or formatted text and images.

One Comment to “From Google Docs to WordPress”

  1. I like the idea of looking at your categories and blogging the most about that – it’s good inspiration. I have been torn between the direction of what my newest site should be focused on and after reading this and a little steve palina yesterday, i think personal is how i want to go next.
